ADULT ILLITERACY
Adult education is the process to provide education to the adults and aged people who somehow failed to receive it during their childhood. Education is the stepping stone in building a strong nation. It is education and enlightenment that lifts a nation to heights of progress and greatness.
However this situation is distressing in India. Although the literacy rates have risen from 12% post-independence to 75% in 2011, it is way below the world average rate of 84%.
Adult education is necessary as it is a powerful auxiliary and essential incentive to primary education. Unless the adults realise the importance of education, they will not understand the need to educate their progeny. Hence, the concept of Adult Education is being promoted at every level on a large scale. It is needed to widen the intellectual and political horizons, as well as to sharpen aesthetic and cultural sensibilities. It clears the concepts of new approaches to life, relationships, self reliance and economic efficiency.
National development and reconstruction are closely allied to each other. Keeping this in mind, the Indian Government initiated multiple Adult Literacy programmes early on. These include community development programmes, social education programmes, Gram Shikshan Mohem, workers education Janta schools and night school. The most prominent programmes/acts launched by the government are-
~National Adult Education Programme (NAEP) : launched on a massive scale in 1978.
~National Literacy Mission (NLM) : launched in 1988.
~Sakshar Bharat : launched in 2009, a teaching and learning programme.
Government and non-government institutions provide education and training to adults through open/distance-teaching schools such as IGNOU- which has helped bring education to the doorsteps of the population.
We as liberal, literate citizens must help and participate in this movement too. Teach your maid or her children, donate books, be a member of the community service club at your school. After all, illiteracy and ignorance is a sin; an illiterate child/adult is a burden on the society. The motto for us must, and should be -
Each One, Teach One.
