                                                ADULT ILLITERACY

Adult education is the process to provide education to the adults and aged people who somehow failed to receive it during their childhood. Education is the stepping stone in building a strong nation. It is education and enlightenment that lifts a nation to heights of progress and greatness.

However this situation is distressing in India. Although the literacy rates have risen from 12% post-independence to 75% in 2011, it is way below the world average rate of 84%.

Adult education is necessary as it is a powerful auxiliary and essential incentive to primary education. Unless the adults realise the importance of education, they will not understand the need to educate their progeny. Hence, the concept of Adult Education is being promoted at every level on a large scale. It is needed to widen the intellectual and political horizons, as well as to sharpen aesthetic and cultural sensibilities. It clears the concepts of new approaches to life, relationships, self reliance and economic efficiency.

National development and reconstruction are closely allied to each other. Keeping this in mind, the Indian Government initiated multiple Adult Literacy programmes early on. These include community development programmes, social education programmes, Gram Shikshan Mohem, workers education Janta schools and night school. The most prominent programmes/acts launched by the government are-
~National Adult Education Programme (NAEP) : launched on a massive scale in 1978.
~National Literacy Mission (NLM) : launched in 1988.
~Sakshar Bharat : launched in 2009, a teaching and learning programme.

Government and non-government institutions provide education and training to adults through open/distance-teaching schools such as IGNOU- which has helped bring education to the doorsteps of the population.

We as liberal, literate citizens must help and participate in this movement too. Teach your maid or her children, donate books, be a member of the community service club at your school. After all, illiteracy and ignorance is a sin; an illiterate child/adult is a burden on the society. The motto for us must, and should be -
Each One, Teach One.

The Day God Needed Help

"Oh no! Not again."
Ribhav, like any other 13 year old boy, was an avid  video-game player, and highly popular for his back-bencher type lifestyle. "Ribhav, quit playing these video games and go do your homework! Or else I'll take all these 'Birds are Angry' and throw them out of the house." Ribhav winced. "Mom, Angry Birds."  Mom was peeping into his room, looking with horror at the mess he had made. Of course, all Moms want their house clean, but for Ribhav it didn't really matter.

Living in a country called India, the electricity had never been really cooperative since the times of Mahabharata. No wonder Sanjay had to install a Door-Darshan in his brain. "Oh God! I was going to beat the last level of Night Party with Zombies! Did the electricity have to go right now?" He smashed the joystick with impatience, and suddenly  went dizzy. His head spun round and round. Right then,he found himself rejuvenated with a special type of freshness. He was not in his room, but at some other unknown place. Lying before him looked like a pile of fanmail, and dozens of telephones were ringing around him. "Who keeps landline nowadays, smartphones are a lot better."he thought. "Sorry kid, my hands are too big to type with those tiny buttons in smartphones." said a deep, sad voice. Ribhav turned around.

On a pink velvet sofa, sat a middle aged man surrounded by mist,  probably around his 40s. But looking at him, it looked like he had already hit his 70s. Wrinkles highlighted his once smiling face, and his hair looked like a garden of vines. He had a salt-and-pepper goatee, and was lounging on the sofa in his Spongebob pajamas and beer bottle in hand. "You've got normal hands?! Who are you?"questioned Ribhav, rather curiously. "It was you who called upon me kid. I am God."

God? Who is God? On the Earth, all human beings went from place to place looking for gods in temples, mosques, sacred places and holy rivers. Even when told that God resides within, these people still had a craze to find "God" and get blessed. Did god have any importance in times of trouble, yes. Atleast for Ribhav, he was a random word he said when lights went off or he got stuck in a traffic jam.

"You can't be God! I don't believe you. You're lying!"exclaimed Ribhav. "You called me, and I'm here. Now tell me what you called me for?"said the strange man. "When did I call..... Okay. Yeah, I said 'oh god not again' and you think I said that purposely? Nah. I just said that without really thinking." "And that is what I hate about you human beings, always whining and crying about your problems. Making you was a big mistake. I'm done!"the man said, coughing.

"What do you mean?" Ribhav was totally confused. "Child, like I said, I'm God. You won't believe that because you cannot see my true form, as you are human. If you would, your eyes would burn right away due to the light. You humans were created by me, and honoured me by appreciating me. But when these humans gave me names and temples, I had lots of work to do," God pointed towards the letters and continued, "I want you to help me. Since you seem like a person interested in video gaming and computing, I want you to do my work so I can rest for a day." Ribhav had never made any serious decisions, or had any moment of deep thought. This sudden flow of knowledge was a little to much to handle.

"What will I get?"he questioned. "What a question! Lets see, if you help me for a day, I shall grant you 1 wish." "Just one?!" "Of course, it's you who's causing the trouble after all." "Okay!" As God began to doze on the sofa, Ribhav got to work right away. He started off by going through the letters. Full of problems. And they were continuously pouring in. "Why do people depend on God? They should face their own problems!"

Frustrated, Ribhav went over to the computer to check God's mail. 'God, please help me in passing the exams.' 'God, please remove this traffic jam I'm getting late for office.' "What is all this, thousands of silly mails!! What am I going to do?!" He looked towards God, and felt pity. "But I must help him too."he thought.  "Hey God, do you have to pay a bill for all this?"he yelled. With a wave of his hand, God gave his answer and went back to sleep.

Ribhav walked over to the aisles full of telephones, ringing. Suddenly, and idea struck his mind. He ran over to a computer and started typing rapidly. "Let's see, www.facebook.com/ is where I'll get all the problems solved!" He prepared a page named 'Heavenly Advice from God' and administered it. "Sweet!"he grinned.

Time seemed to go by quickly. It looked like the clock in God's office was on fire. Ribhav was really enthusiastic about being God's apprentice, at least for a day. Even though it was tiring,  it was like being Mario, the video game hero coming to God's rescue. Haha. Ribhav began to post different advices for daily problems a common man has. Within hours, his page had about 16million likes!! "I hope that this would be helpful."he said, hopefully .Fortunately, much less letters were pouring in and the number of bells ringing was rarely any. For all the letters that were still left, he began scribbling the page link and sending them back. "I won't answer the calls, the signals can give you cancer." He said to him self, jokingly.

"Yes, I think you have done enough work for me today Ribhav. Good job making that page, really good indeed!!"said God. He suddenly looked a bit alive. He had changed into a punk outfit, and was having a magic wand in his hand. "What's that for, God ji?" "You ask too many questions Ribhav! Now tell me your wish, you've helped me a lot! A good one, fast."
Ribhav grinned. He knew just what he wanted.

"Ribhav, have you packed your games yet? Now clean your room and study!" Not even a second had passed in the real world, was it all dream or just some crazy imagination? No, it wasn't. "All done Mom!"Ribhav replied. Mom came to have a look. "How, when, what..... When did you clean your room?"she was astonished.

Ribhav sat down happily to play the last level of Night Party with Zombies. Suddenly, the lights went away. "Oh no! Not again."

Green Beans: the Mystery of Hollow Oak by Gabriel Gadget

Noise in the woods, and this 10yr old is very curious about it. Ahhh...and the boy's name is Neil. I think.

Such a boring book!!!!! No wonder its free on Amazon. The first three chapters are all about little kids playing baseball(no interest) and I got so bored I just deleted it. Not worth it. Not at All!! Actually, I think the author is a crazy baseball fan. (y)

A Sliver of Hope by Karla J. Nelienbach

Hope and Hannah...twins since birth, and soul sisters forever. But when Hannah finds Hope dead on the morning of April 1st, she thinks its just another one of Hope's filthy jokes. Hope was probably the only person she knew inside-out, and could trust her life on. The grief of Hope's death is dragging Hannah down into an abyss of misery. That's when brother Doug arrives with Julian, the first person to break her heart. Will Julian help Hannah out of this abyss, or will it be Hannah who would have to make the effort?? As Hannah discovers the 'otherside' of Hope's bright, cheerful nature, it would be unlikely to happen...but when Julian's there, everything can be crazy but fine all at the same time.

Another free book on Amazon! Though the book got rated mostly 5stars, I though it lacked expression. Yes, one part did bring tears (when Hannah called Hope a b****), but other wise, it was mostly Hannah calling Hope selfish all the time. I LOVED Julian's character, but Glory wasn't so 'involved'. Her drinking and partying did complete most of the gap, but the deficiency of Hannah's school days with her did leave some excitement. I like Doug, and his sudden attachment to Hannah. Mom was more lost out, whereas Dad was helping Hannah through therapy. I loved Julian, his carefree attitude and attractive smiles, but the book seemed more of a love story rather than an emotional drama type. Julian's part should have been cut of a bit. Also, I think more of Hannah's and Hope's childhood memories should have been described. Hope seemed like having an all-rounder reputation, but after her her death Hannah is in the limelight. I liked that, and also how Julian would materialise by her side when ever she lost self-esteem. Didn't get some parts though, so I recommend it for readers 13+. :D

Alexis Tappendorf and the Search for Beale's Treasure by Becca C. Smith

Alexis's parents are off to New York for a top-secret research. And with no other place to live...she has to survive at her Great Grandma Mae's bungalow for a whole 6 weeks. On their way, she notice men with metal detectors being arrested by the cops. The question arises, what was illegal in going around to finding stuff with metal detectors? On reaching, Alexis befriends the Boyds, and learns to hate the mayor-family Woodmores. She discovers that hidden in the ordinary country-side town Summervale is a century old hidden wonder, aka the Beale's Treasure. Olivia and Alexis are on the search, but what can two little girls do if even no adult has managed to decipher the second clue?! Will the manage to keep away the nasty Woodmores and help to fulfill their family's expenses...

This book is too good to be sold for free on the Amazon website. I found this story to be quite well written, though I though the author should have used more "colourful" words. Some things did make me curious, like how the Woodmores managed to reach the treasure at the end since they were so fat(haha) and how Great Aunt Mae could cook such delicious food in such great amounts even when the family was on their financial lows. I enjoyed the character of the Woodmores, and the occasional fun the family made of them. I would have liked to know more about Mae's late daughter Nora, how she must have been.

The next book following the disappearance of Alexis parents is about the unfounded city of Atlantis.... And I would also love to do some reading on that.
